Point Calimere Wild Life Sanctuary

The Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary was created in 1967, covers an area of 1728. 81Ha, in the Vedaranyam Block of Nagapattinam District along the Eastern Coast of Tamil Nadu. Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary along with the Great Vedaranyam Swamp was declared as a RAMSAR Wetland Site (No.1210) on August 19″ 2002, The Sanctuary was brought under the control of Nagapattinam Wildlife Division during the year 1986 from Thanjavur Division. Nagapattinam itself was declared as a separate Revenue District in the year 1991. Kodiyakkrai and Kodiyakkadu villages are the nearest villages present along the Sanctuary.

Cholas Lighthouse

Cholas Lighthouse is the remnants of a brick-and-mortar lighthouse near Point Calimere which was built by the Cholas more than a thousand years ago. The ruins of a 1000-year-old Cholas lighthouse stand at the site marked 'Point Calimere' (where the Bay of Bengal meets the Palk Strait). There is also a British-period Lighthouse, which is 13- meters (43 ft) tall and was built-in 1890.

Ramar padham

It is located near the entrance of the sanctuary and carries the impressions of Lord Rama's feet in stone. The shrine stands on a small hillock, which is the highest point inside the sanctuary (22 m above MSL). The major congregation takes place during the Ram Navami festival that is celebrated during February/March.
